Using your basic self-inflating mattress for the first time

How to inflate this mattress ?

It is really important to inflate your mattress to a good pressure.
Do not over-inflate in order to reduce wear and tear, and avoid damaging your back, but inflate the mattress enough so that it is comfortable and allows you to sleep properly. When sitting on the mattress, your bottom should be touching the ground.

A self-inflating mattress inflates itself to approximately 80% full. So, leave it for about 20 minutes with the valve open and then adjust the pressure using mouth-inflation.

HOW TO USE Basic camping self-inflating mattress

How to deflate and fold this mattress into its bag ?

You just need to open the valve so that the mattress gradually deflates on its own. To speed up the process, you can press on the mattress to expel as much air as possible.

You can now start folding it in half across the width, and then roll it up lengthwise starting at the opposite end from the valve so that it can be stored in its bag Remember to close the cap.

How to sleep well on an inflatable mattress ?

As mentioned previously, the pressure of the mattress is the key to a good night's sleep. When seated, you should be able to feel the ground. When you are lying down, the air will spread evenly under your whole body.

There is no preferred way to sleep: you can sleep with your head at the valve end or at the other end; do as you see fit!

For maximum comfort, get a sleeping bag with the correct temperature rating, as well as a pillow.

What is the r-value ?

The R-value standard (ASTM F3340-18) measures the thermal resistance of the mattress, i.e. the level of insulation it provides against the cold coming from the ground.
There are various levels:
- 0 to 1.9: summer use only
- 2 to 3: can be used from spring to autumn
- 3 to 4: can be used all year round
- greater than 4.5: winter use and suitable for extreme conditions

This mattress has an R-Value of 3.5.

How to stop your mattress from making noises ?

When you sleep, the sound of rubbing between the mattress and the ground can be annoying.
Do not over-inflate in order to minimise this problem.

You can also put a blanket or a sheet under the mattress.

How to optimise the insulation of your mattress ?

If you want to improve the thermal insulation of your mattress and get better protection from the cold and moisture of the ground, you can put a foam mattress or a survival blanket under your mattress, or a groundsheet under your tent.
