what pressure is right for your tyres?

Different pressures for different types of cycling

The idea behind the hand pump is to be as compact as possible so that you can carry it absolutely anywhere with you.

For that reason, it doesn't have a pressure gauge. All the same, if you get a puncture and pump your tyre back up, here are some things you can do to check whether it's inflated enough:

Mountain bikes

- press the tyre with your thumb. If you end up touching the rim, your tyre isn't pumped up enough. There should be resistance when you press on it, but you should still be able to push your thumb in slightly.
- when you're riding, look to see whether the rims are touching the ground and whether the tyre seems underinflated.

Hybrid and city bikes

- press the tyre with your thumb. If you end up touching the rim, your tyre isn't pumped up enough. There should be resistance when you press on it, but you should still be able to push your thumb in slightly.
- when you're riding, look to see whether the rims are touching the ground and whether the tyre seems underinflated.

It's essential to check your tyre pressure using a pump that has a pressure gauge, and to add or remove air so that your tyres are at the recommended pressure for the type of cycling you're doing.

WHEN TO PUMP UP YOUR TYRES

There are different ways of checking depending on how often you ride:

If you ride every day (3-7 days per week).

- at the start of the week, inflate your tyres to the recommended pressure using a pump that has a pressure gauge.
- squeeze the tyre between your finger and thumb before each ride to make sure it hasn't deflated.

If you only ride occasionally (once per week).

- pump up your tyres before each ride because they will have lost pressure since you last went out on them.

HAVE A PROBLEM?

I'm pumping but it's not inflating

There are several possible reasons for this problem:

- you haven't screwed the pump far enough onto the valve.
- you haven't unscrewed the valve enough (except with Schrader).

YOU CAN'T CONNECT THE VALVE TO THE PUMP

- Make sure you're using the right pump tip with the right valve.
- Check that you have one of the following valves: Presta - Schrader - Dunlop.
- Push on the tip and screw on at the same time.

HAVE A PROBLEM?
AIR IS ESCAPING WHEN YOU PUMP

- Check that the pump is correctly screwed onto the valve
- To make your pumping more efficient, position the valve perpendicular to the floor (top or bottom) so that your hose is straight

HAVE A PROBLEM?
YOU CAN'T GET YOUR TYRES TO THE RIGHT PRESSURE

This pump is designed to be used when you're out riding and get a puncture. It enables you to put air into your new inner tube. There's no pressure gauge, so it's hard to know the exact pressure.
You should get hold of a pump with a pressure gauge.
