ROCKRIDER E-ST500 ELECTRIC MOUNTAIN BIKE

This electric mountain bike's torque motor lets you explore absolutely anywhere while its 420Wh battery means you can go for even longer rides. The parts are sized to be more robust.

First use

What's the right pressure for your tyres?

Having the right tyre pressure is particularly important on an electric bike. The wheels have a lot of weight on them because of the combination of the motor and bike. To minimise the risk of a puncture while keeping your bike comfortable and retaining grip, we recommend inflating your tyres to 1.8 bar.   If you weigh more than 90 kg, you should increase this pressure slightly.

How often do you need to recharge your battery?

It takes six hours to charge the battery fully (from 0% to 100%). However, it only takes 3 hours to charge the battery from 0% to 80%.

How should you store your battery?

You must store and charge your battery in a cool (between 10°C and 25°C), dry place, out of direct sunlight. Do not store the battery for long periods if it is empty or below 10% charge as this may result in deep discharge and damage the battery.   You should charge the battery (even if it's not being used) at least once every six months to prevent deep discharge and loss of the battery's capacity.

Should you wait until your battery is completely flat before charging it?

No. Lithium-ion batteries have no memory effect and can therefore be charged at any time. We recommend charging your battery regularly to keep it working well.

Do you need to pedal for the electrical assistance to start?

Yes, the Rockrider e-ST500 mountain bike is an electrical assistance bike. This assistance is only triggered when the user pedals. A motorised system that involves no pedalling is considered to be a moped, with usage restrictions and much stricter safety rules.   A pedalling sensor transmits the pedalling power data to the bike's on-board computer, which triggers the motor. This sensor measures the pedalling power of the user, and provides assistance proportional to the force applied to the pedals. This means that the more pressure you put on the pedals, the more electrical assistance is provided, resulting in a smooth pedalling action without jolts.   The amount of assistance provided can also be adjusted by selecting an assistance mode (1, 2, or 3). The rider must provide greater pedalling force when in mode 1 than in mode 3 to achieve the same level of assistance.

Does the battery charge while cycling?

No, it doesn't have a dynamo. Some systems charge the battery when you pedal or brake, but these systems are not very efficient. You would need to ride several dozen kilometres to get just 1 additional km of assistance.

Where can you buy a replacement battery?

You can buy a new battery from your local Decathlon workshop. Contact your nearest workshop to find out whether they have the battery you need in stock and how long it will take to arrive.

Can you ride when it's raining? are the components watertight?

The battery is designed to be used when it's raining but it shouldn't be submerged in water or washed with a pressure washer. The same is true for the display and the other electrical components and cables.   Nevertheless, we recommend sheltering your bike as much as possible when you're not riding it.

Rockrider e-ST 500 mountain bike - battery seal advice
Can you leave your charger connected to the battery even after it has finished charging?

Yes, the charger is designed to be connected round the clock. When the battery is fully charged, the charger stops charging. You can tell when it is charged because the LED will turn off.

Can you ride when your battery is flat?

It's an electrical assistance bike. That means it's entirely possible to ride without this assistance. Of course, the extra weight of the motor system will make cycling a little harder.

What should you do if you have a problem with your electric bike?

Click on the TROUBLESHOOTING tab and you'll find an FAQ where you can get solutions to any difficulties you may be having with your Rockrider e-ST500 electric bike.   You can also use our help form to contact one of our specialist technicians who will be happy to answer your questions and help you resolve any problems.   You can also visit one of our Decathlon workshops, where our cycling experts will take a look at your bike.

What is walking mode?

When you need to push your bike while walking alongside it, this mode takes some of the strain! Please note: this mode should not be used when riding your bike. It starts, and remains active, while the "UP" button is held down. This mode switches off when you stop pressing the button. Walking mode only works on steep climbs if you push the bike hard enough. If you don't, error 83 will appear. This is designed to protect the motor from overheating. You will need to turn the screen off and back on again to get rid of this error.   Never use walking mode while riding the bike as this may damage the motor.

Bedding in your disc brakes

To get the best out of your brakes you'll need to bed them in beforehand. When your bike leaves the shop with its shiny new brake pads and discs, their braking power is weak.   Bedding in takes just 10 decelerations per brake. The bedding-in process involves getting up to a speed of 25 km/h and then applying just one of the brakes firmly to reduce your speed to 5 km/h, without locking the wheel.

Electrical troubleshooting

The electrical assistance isn't kicking in

The electrical assistance kicks in when you pedal. You need to be applying force to the pedals and to have selected an appropriate assistance mode.

If the electrical assistance still does not work, follow the instructions below.

1. Check the battery charge.

The battery charge level can be checked by pressing the battery power button.

If the first LED blinks or no LEDs light up, the battery is flat. Plug it into its charger and connect to a mains socket to charge it.

2. Check that the battery is clean and properly plugged in.

> Check that the battery connectors and housing are clean and in good condition.

> The battery must be correctly inserted into the lower slot (see photo) and the handle must be fully down (you should hear it "click" into place to confirm that it's in correctly).

3. Let the system cool down.

In high temperatures, or after a long ride, the electrical system may overheat. Allow the bike to cool down by not using the electrical assistance for several minutes before turning it back on.

4. Check that the motor's connector is properly plugged in.

> The motor plug at the top of the frame's left rear stay could be disconnected or damaged.

> Open the connector and check that none of the plugs are bent.

> Reconnect it, taking care to orient the connectors correctly to avoid bending a plug! Use the two arrows etched into each side of the connectors to check the orientation. The two arrows should be identical and facing each other before you insert the connector.

> Once the connectors are fully plugged in, lock the connection in place by turning the knobs until the connection joint is slightly compressed and deformed.

Simply push it in so that it is fully in place (the male connector shouldn't be poking out at all). Ensure that the connector is correctly positioned (the arrow indicators should be pointing at each other).

4. Turn on the screen by pressing the ON/OFF button.

Turn on the screen by holding the ON/OFF button until the display comes on.

5. Select an assistance mode other than 0.

If the mode displayed on the screen is 0, the motor will not deliver any electrical assistance.

Select assistance modes 1, 2 or 3.

Once the mode is selected, start pedalling, pressing firmly on the pedals.  Select a higher assistance mode (3 is the highest) if you find it too difficult to pedal hard enough to engage the electrical assistance.

If the electrical assistance still fails to engage, please contact us or bring your bike to a Decathlon workshop.

The electrical assistance is cutting off

The electric assistance requires force to be exerted on the pedals and an assistance mode to be activated (a mode other than 0)

If you have tried everything and the electrical assistance still does not work, follow the instructions below.

1. Check the battery charge.

If the battery is low and the selected assistance level is too high for the remaining charge, the electrical assistance will shut itself off.

The bike will automatically conserve the remaining battery power for use with assistance levels that require little power, and to power the bike's screen.

If the first LED blinks or no LEDs light up, the battery is flat. Plug it into its charger and connect to a power mains socket to charge it.

2. - Check that the battery is clean, properly plugged in and locked in place

> Check that the battery connectors and holder are clean and in good condition.

If the problem persists, please contact us through the contact form, or visit a Decathlon workshop.

The electrical assistance isn't very effective

1. Check the tyre pressure.

> The tyre pressure determines how efficiently your electrical assistance works. Before each ride, make sure your tyres are inflated to 1.8 bar.

2. Make sure you don't overload your bike

3. If your battery isn't well charged, the motor won't get enough current to deliver the assistance you need. In this case, switch to a lower electrical assistance mode.

4. If the motor seems juddery, check that it is properly connected.

The motor connection on the frame's left rear stay might be out of place.

Make sure it is properly connected (the male connector shouldn't be poking out at all) to stop the noise and juddering.

The electrical assistance is very jerky

Note: the Rockrider e-ST500 is an electrical assistance bike whose assistance is activated by a torque sensor. If you stop pushing on the pedals, the assistance will cut out. If you find pedalling too difficult, set the bike to a higher assistance mode and switch to a lower (and thus easier) gear ratio.

The electrical assistance will automatically cut off once the bike reaches a speed of 25 km/h; this is not a malfunction.

If, however, you find that the assistance cuts in and out abnormally and in a jerky manner, please check the following:

1. Check that the battery is fully charged.

If the battery is almost empty and the bike is set to a high assistance mode, this can produce a somewhat jerky effect before the battery goes completely flat.

> Remove the battery from the bike.

> Press the battery button.

> Check that at least one LED lights up.

> If none of the LEDs light up, or the last LED blinks, recharge the battery.

2. Check that the battery is clean, properly attached and locked in place.

> Check that the battery connectors and holder are clean and in good condition.

> The battery must be correctly inserted into the lower slot (see photo) and the handle must be fully down (you should hear it "click" into place to confirm that it's in correctly).

3. Check that the motor's connector is properly plugged in.

> The motor connector, which is located at the rear stay on the left side of the frame, may be slightly bent.

Simply push it in so that it is fully in place (the male connector shouldn't be poking out at all) to eliminate judder and/or motor noises.

If the problem persists, please contact us through the contact form, or visit a Decathlon workshop for a full check-up.

The battery life is low or has gone down

1. Make sure you are using and storing it as recommended

The range of your electric bike depends on a number of factors:

> THE BIKE'S LOAD: The battery life will be shorter if the bike is overloaded.

> THE TYPE OF TERRAIN: The battery life will be shorter going uphill.

> THE TYRE PRESSURE: The battery will last longer with tyres that are inflated to 1.8 bar.

> THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE: The battery life will be lower in cold weather (up to 50% less).

> THE ASSISTANCE MODE USED: It is advisable to reduce the assistance mode when the battery charge is low.

> THE PEDALLING CADENCE

> CORRECTLY FOLLOWING THE BATTERY CHARGING AND STORAGE CONDITIONS.

2. An old battery may lose some performance.

The distance you can travel will therefore be reduced. Visit your Decathlon workshop to give your battery a check-up.

Mechanical troubleshooting

You start pulling the brake lever and it touches the handlebars

If the brake lever is too slack, too limp or is touching the handlebar without much pressure being exerted on it, use the barrel on the brake lever to adjust the tension of the brake cable, as shown in the video below.

Loosen the barrel and the locknut to adjust the cable tension so that the brake lever is firm but not too hard.

Once you've got the setting right, tighten the locknut against the brake lever.

Your fork has seized up or is not sliding very well

Your suspension fork will work best above 5°C. In temperatures below this, the suspension can harden up and stop working so well, but it won't get damaged.

It will start to function normally again when the temperature rises above 5°C. If you detect a fault, however, or you are not sure if your fork is in good condition, take it to your nearest Decathlon workshop and have it checked straight away.

Your gears are not shifting properly
You've taken your bike out a few times and a wheel is buckled

When you take your new bike out for a ride for the first time, a lot of parts move around and fall into place.

You'll hear the spokes on your wheels creak because of the residual torsion in them.

Your wheels should not buckle in any way at all. If they do, then make the most of the free check-up available to you within six months of purchase and call in at one of our DECATHLON workshops to have them repaired free of charge.

Your fork is too hard

There are several reasons why your fork might be too hard.

1- Adjustments

Visit the "adjusting your fork" section to easily adjust the stiffness to suit your preferences.

2. Basic maintenance

Maintain your fork on a regular basis with an oil can. Place several drops on the fork's steerer tube and move it around to work the oil into the blades.

3- Full maintenance

If adjusting your fork and performing some basic maintenance isn't enough, you should give your fork a more thorough service as shown in the video below.

Adjusting and maintaining your fork is done at your own risk and Decathlon cannot be held liable if you perform maintenance work incorrectly. If you are not sure how to do any of the maintenance procedures, please visit your nearest Decathlon workshop.

Product maintenance

Regular maintenance is important if you want to keep your bike working efficiently for as long as possible, so we've put together some maintenance tips to help you.

1. Before each ride, make sure your tyres are inflated to 1.8 bar.

2. Charge the battery fully at least once every 6 months.

3. Store the battery in a dry place, at a moderate temperature, and out of the sun.
