B'TWIN 14" BIKE 3-5 YEARS 100 ARCTIC

1, 2, 3, pedal! We've designed this 14" bike for children aged 3 to 5 years, with a height of 90 to 105cm, learning to pedal and ride like the big kids. Minimalist and robust, with a low stepthrough, this bike with stabilisers allows your child to learn at their own pace. And thanks to the chainguard, no risk of small fingers catching in the chain!

First use

CHECKING THE ADJUSTMENT OF THE BRAKES

Roll the bike forwards using the handlebar. Press the brake lever. The rear wheel should then stop moving.

 

If you notice that the brakes are not working correctly, please try the following: There is an adjustment wheel in front of the brake lever. You'll see a "+" and a "-". If you turn the adjustment wheel clockwise (towards the "+"), this will tighten the brake (= more powerful braking). If you turn the adjustment wheel anti-clockwise (towards the "-"), this will loosen the brake (= weaker braking).

 

It is important to regularly check the brakes.

REMOVING THE STABILISERS FROM THE 100 BIKE

To remove the stabilisers from the 14" Arctic bike, you'll need a BTR spanner (= allen key).

Then remove the stabilisers located on each side of the bike using the BTR spanner. 

And it's done!

 

It's the start of a brand new two-wheeled adventure :-) 

WHAT PRESSURE TO INFLATE THE 14" TYRES TO? 

The recommended pressure is always written on the side of each tyre. We recommend inflating the tyres to the pressure indicated on the tyre sidewall. This may vary between tyres. 

To check if the tyre is inflated correctly, simply squeeze it between your fingers: it should be firm while still yielding a bit when pressed. 

ADJUSTING THE HEIGHT OF THE SADDLE AND HANDLEBAR FOR THE FIRST RIDE

It's important to adjust the height of the seat post and handlebar to suit the child. The minimum insert line for the seat post and handlebar should never be visible for safety reasons (ensure this minimum insertion mark is not exceeded).  

To ensure the saddle height is correct: when sitting on the saddle, the child should have the forefoot of both feet touching the ground.

This will allow the child to easily get on and off their bike, and prevent their knees from rising too high when pedalling.

MAINTAINING THE BIKE

WASHING THE BIKE

If you notice the bike is dirty after a few rides (mud, rain, dust, etc.), give it a good clean!   If it's just dust: you can just use a dry cloth to clean it. If there is more persistent mud or other dirt, you can clean it with a bucket of hot water and a sponge (or a wet cloth) with soap or bike shampoo. You can then clean the dirty parts of the bike (frame, fork, handlebar, wheel).   DID YOU KNOW?  Avoid washing your bike with a hose: some components won't take it kindly!   When you've finished, simply wipe it dry with a dry cloth to prevent rust.
Take the opportunity to check the tightness of the clamps and wheels: are they tight enough? If not, tighten them with a spanner.

CLEANING AND GREASING THE CHAIN

You can use an all in one product for cleaning, lubricating and protecting the chain (available in Decathlon stores). Turn the chain using the pedal and spray along the length of the chain.  Leave to dry.

We recommend storing the 14" bike in a dry place. It's important to ensure it stays dry.

Wash with a wet cloth and soap or washing up liquid, then wipe with a dry cloth!

I'VE GOT A PROBLEM

REMOVING AND REASSEMBLING THE CHAINGUARD TO CHANGE THE INNER TUBE 

Why remove the chainguard? It's an essential step if you want to access the rear wheel to change the inner tube, for example. 

 

REAR WHEEL:

 

STEP 1: Face the right-hand side of the bike. Use a 15mm spanner to unscrew the right pedal (turn it anti-clockwise).

Do the same for the other side:
face the left-hand side of the bike. Use a 15mm spanner to unscrew the left pedal (turn it clockwise)

STEP 2: Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the elastomer ring located above the chainguard, then move it up the seat post. You can then hook it onto the seat clamp collar to prevent it from sliding down.

Then, remove the second ring located underneath the chainguard.

 

STEP 3: unscrew the chainguard nut (located on the rear wheel axle) using a 15mm spanner, on each side of the wheel.

Then, remove the flat washer. Try to position the crank facing forwards (see photo) to make it easier to remove the chainguard. Now you can remove the chainguard. To do this, hold the rear of the chainguard and remove it completely.  Do the same for the other side.

 

STEP 4: loosen the wheel nut using a 14mm spanner. Then remove the nut and the grooved washer (the grooved washer has grooves on the underside).

 

STEP 5:  push the rear wheel forwards to loosen the chain. Then remove the chain. Remove the wheel from its position by pulling it backwards. (be careful, it stays attached to the bike through the drum brake). Remove the flat washer from the right-hand side.

 

THE TYRE AND INNER TUBE ARE FINALLY ACCESSIBLE! 

You can now change the tyre if needed or repair a puncture to the inner tube.
