UNBOXING

VAN RYSEL EDR CF DB SHIMANO 105 WOMEN (2021) user guide, repairs

FIRST USE

To help you get acquainted with your new ride, here are some tips on using your EDR bike for the first time.

  • TYRE PRESSURE

The first time you ride your bike you will want to choose the correct tyre pressure based on weather conditions and your weight. Here are our recommendations for 25 mm tyres:
    - Front: 6.5 bar (80 psi)
    - Rear: 6.5 bar (90 psi)

  • 2. FIRST USE

    BEDDING IN THE BRAKE PADS

Running in the brake pads is vital when using a bike for the first time.

To run them in properly, we recommend you brake 20 to 30 times at over 25 km/h, without locking the wheel.

  • 2. FIRST USE

    TORQUE SETTINGS

Please follow the recommended torque settings for tightening the screws on your bike, especially the stem/handlebar (see the user guide) as there is a fall risk if those are not tightened correctly. 6Nm.

To set your position properly on the bike, carry a multi-tool set of Allen keys with you.

SWITCHING YOUR EDR TO TUBELESS

Step 1

Use a repair kit to remove the tyre from one side of the rim so that you can then remove the inner tube from the wheel of your EDR.

3/ SWITCHING YOUR EDR TO TUBELESS

Step 2

Once you've removed one side of the tyre from the rim, place the tubeless valve through the hole in the rim.

Inject a sealant and spin the wheel so the liquid becomes evenly distributed on the inside.

3/ SWITCHING YOUR EDR TO TUBELESS

Step 3

Once the sealant is in place, put the tyre back in place and inflate it until it "snaps tight" against the rim.

Spin the wheel once more to make sure the sealant is applied evenly around the entire tyre.

MAINTENANCE

Maintaining your bike is essential if you want to expand its lifecycle. That starts with regularly cleaning your bike, the frame and drive train.

  • Step 1

Apply a degreaser to your drive train. Place a cloth on top of the brake discs to prevent them from being covered with degreaser.

  • 4. MAINTENANCE

    Step 2

Clean your drive train with the aid of a brush. Apply a suitable cleaning product to your frame.

  • 4. MAINTENANCE

    Step 3

Drying your bike and lubricating your drive train.

Essential tools for your workshop.

To maintain your bike correctly, you need to have the right tools.

Selecting the right tyre for your EDR

The tyre is the only element in contact with the ground. To minimise the risk of it losing grip, it's essential to choose the right type of tyre, and adapt the pressure accordingly.

The EDR comes with tubeless-ready wheels.

Adjusting and tightening the seatpost

To set your saddle correctly it needs to be securely in place. A loose seat post can slip when you're out and about on your bike.
If you tighten it up too much, however, you run the risk of crushing the seatpost and damaging your bike.

The best way to tighten a seat post is to use a torque wrench. We recommend you tighten it to between 6 and 7Nm.

Take care not to exceed the maximum height indicated on the seat post.

Changing your chain

The chain is an essential part of your bike's drive train. The following are tell-tale signs that you need to change it:
- The chain starts jumping.
- The chain has been on for more than 5,000 kilometres.
- Gear changes are not smooth.

To find out more read our article:

Changing your brake pads

The following are all signs that you might need to change your brake pads:

- You don't have the same responsiveness as when you bought your EDR and there's a lack of grip.
- Your bike makes a strange noise when you brake sharply.
- The thickness of the pad is below 0.5 mm.

Changing your brake discs

Although disc brakes are designed to wear out the brake pads and not the disc, the disc will end up wearing out through use over time.

It can be dangerous to ride with an overly worn disc; it can give out if you brake suddenly or intensely.

The maximum wear value of the thickness of the disc is around 10% of its original value. We strongly recommend that you change it when the wear exceeds that figure.

Greasing the bearings on your bike

To ensure your frame lasts longer, grease the bearings and abrasive parts of your EDR bike regularly. You should be keeping a close eye on the following:

- Bottom bracket.
- Steerer tube.
- Wheel bearings.
- Seatpost.

Your drive train makes noise

If your drive train is too noisy and/or your gears don't shift properly, you certainly need to adjust your derailleurs.

Replace the cables

There is no special number of kilometres to know when to replace your cables.

It depends on your practice of cycle touring/sport cycling/competition;

But also depends on how delicately you change gears - that is, if you change gears very regularly during your rides or not.

The first signs of wear are:

Is it challenging to change gears?
Even after adjusting them!
That means it might be time to replace your cables before they give out in the middle of a ride.

Also, if you notice that a housing or a cable is fraying, don't wait to replace it

GOT A PROBLEM?

In this section, we've listed the most common problems encountered with the EDR. To extend the life of your bike's components and avoid having to work on them, we recommend the following:

  • MAINTAINING/CLEANING YOUR BIKE

To extend the life cycle of every part on your bike and its drive train, you must clean them regularly.

Please refer to the section above to find out what to do.

  • WEAR

Your bike's wear parts all have a shelf life. If you don't replace them when necessary, it might cause other parts to wear more quickly or cause them to break:
    - Chain: 5,000 km
    - Cassette: 10,000 km
    - Check the teeth on your chainrings and derailleur pulleys for wear.

  • TORQUE SETTINGS

To ensure you don't put too much strain on the various parts of your EDR bike, please comply with the torque settings that we recommend.

If the torque settings are too high, they can cause parts to break, increasing the risk of you falling.

CHANGING YOUR PEDALS

Are your pedals broken? Do you want to change your pedals for clipless ones? Here's our advice.

NB: please note that the screw thread on the left pedal is inverted and that the pedal thus screws on in an anti-clockwise direction. The right pedal has a standard screw thread.

Please use the correct tool to take your pedals off as force needs to be exerted to unscrew them.

CHANGING YOUR INNER TUBE

If you pick up a puncture, our tutorial will tell you how to change your inner tube.

CHANGING YOUR HANDLEBAR TAPE

The tape on your handlebar will wear over time and you'll need to change it occasionally.

YOUR BIKE ISN'T BRAKING VERY WELL

There are several things you can do if your brakes aren't working as well as they used to:

- Clean your rims with a degreaser

- Check the brake pads for wear.

- Check the tension of the cable.

Are your brake pads worn out? Want to replace them?

Check out the demonstration in this video:

YOUR DISC BRAKES ARE MAKING A NOISE

If your disc makes noise:

- Check that your wheel is properly centred. To do this, loosen the wheel and tighten it up again.

- Check that the brake calliper is in the right position.

- Check the brake pads for wear.

- Check the tension of your brake cables.

CHANGING YOUR HOUSINGS AND BRAKE CABLE

Need to change your brake cables and/or housing?

Follow our tutorial:

YOUR GEARS ARE SKIPPING

If your gears are slipping, you need to check the following:

- Wear on your drive train.

- The tension of the cables.

You then need to adjust the derailleur.

CHANGING YOUR CHAIN

Here's some useful advice on how to change your chain correctly.

HOW TO CHANGE YOUR CHAINRINGS

Are your chainrings worn? Do you want to change the number of teeth?

It's easy to change your chainrings.

To do so, simply use an Allen key to undo the screws that hold the chainrings on.
Then fit the new ones.

Remember that, on this bike, the minimum chainring size is 34T.
